Get Rich with Royalties, by Paul Lawrence
By Daniel Levis | February 10, 2010
One of the sweetest business things that can happen is when you go and open your mailbox and there’s a check in there for thousands of dollars that you didn’t lift a finger to earn.
I’ve been enjoying this experience for the last few years and recently have made new deals for this to happen more often.
Why am I getting these checks?
Well, they’re royalties. Now, you may think that the only real way to get royalty checks is by being a hot shot copywriter… or maybe selling a book to a major publishing house… or maybe selling a screenplay for a movie or television show. Certainly, the people that do this do receive substantial royalties.
But, the good news is that there are many more opportunities for you to set up deals where you’ll receive royalties that aren’t any where near so hard to crack into. In almost any industry you can find opportunities to create deals where you could then receive royalties.
Let me give you an example of a couple of my deals where I earn royalties on a quarterly basis. In one instance I authored a business instructional manual that a very large information publishing company publishes.
Since the original work of creating
the program I do very little…
Yet, I continue to receive checks for thousands of dollars all the time.
In another deal I have, a nutritional product that I developed that has a very interesting USP is marketed by a very large direct mail company. Again, other than doing a little basic consulting on the promotions, I don’t do anything else.
I expect this deal to bring in somewhere close to $50,000 per year…maybe not a fortune, but let’s not forget all of my time will be free to work on other projects as all I’ll need to do on this deal is cash checks.
While I think the largest amount of opportunities for generating deals with larger companies where you can earn royalties is in the information publishing business, there are also many other industries that you could do the same.
As I noted, one of my lucrative deals is with a company that markets nutrition products. If you created a great new board game, you could go to toy manufacturers. You could even possibly find a product to import like a unique exercise machine.
The main criteria is that you are able to offer a unique product for a company to market that offers a clear probability of making the larger company a sizeable profit.
Here are the basic steps to
securing your own royalty deal:
-
Either create or obtain the rights to a product that will have a large demand for a clearly identifiable marketing segment (a group of consumers like middle aged males that have an interest in health products).
-
Identify companies that are in a business where your product would complement what they already sell. You can find them in industry directories or by doing basic Internet searches with the key words including names of the products you want to sell.
-
Develop relationships with the decision makers for such ventures and then pitch your project at the appropriate time.
-
Do any follow up necessary to help assure that the marketing of the product will be successful.
-
Monitor the results and cash the checks.

Simple but thought-provoking. I can already see how I might apply this. The first hurdle though will of course be to create the product.
