I used to hate writing emails.
No, wait… hate isn’t a strong enough word.
I loathed writing emails.
I’d take on any freelance project writing space ads, squeeze pages, sales letters, video scripts…
… You name it, I’d do it.
But ask me to write an email, and it was like you just asked me to pick up a giant, hairy tarantula and kiss it between its eight soul-piercing eyeballs.
The very thought scared the hell out of me.
I’d freeze.
Call it emailophobia.

Emails Are The Linchpin of Any Online Business
The dictionary defines linchpin as:
“A person or thing vital to an enterprise or organization.”
Yep, that’s email in a nutshell.

Sure you can do other things to get eyeballs.

… But you will always, always, always need email to get ‘em on a list, build a relationship with them, and keep driving them back to your sales pages until they buy.
Follow-up is the most profitable game in sales and marketing, bar none.
That’s why, if you don’t know how to write effective emails (emails that build relationships, get clicks, and drive readers to squeeze pages and sales pages)…
… Your business, your career, your you-name-it will be forever stuck in first gear.
And you’re eventually going to call it quits, if you’re smart.
The Simple Mindset Shift That Transformed My Email Writing
I was scared of writing emails, because I didn’t understand them.
Fear is a perfectly natural response to something you don’t understand. Especially, if it’s so new that you have no idea where to start, and your project/career/livelihood is on the line.
The only way to overcome that fear is to educate yourself.
For me, that education began with the biggest bang you could imagine.
On a fluke, I submitted an entry to a copywriting contest.
Little more than two weeks later, I found myself on an airplane to North Carolina to work as a Copy Cub for none other than the legendary Clayton Makepeace.
Sink or swim doesn’t even begin to describe my experience.
It was quite literally, “here’s your desk… here’s your project… now start writing!”
The first lesson I learned was that everything I’d been taught about writing emails was dead wrong. I was relieved. After all, what I knew to be true about writing emails had left me in a state of panic and anxiety (take Valium).
Clearly I needed a new, more effective strategy.
Fortunately for me, one day with Clayton changed everything.
I’d been brainwashed into believing that open rates and clickthrough rates were the twin Holy Grails of email marketing. The only thing that truly mattered.
Therefore, my whole job was to get the email opened and get the click… no matter what.
Yet here was a copywriter (and not just any copywriter, mind you… but the copywriter) that was consistently putting entire sales pages in his emails.
The Only Click He Wanted Was to An Order Form. It Was Straight for the Jugular!
It was a completely contrary philosophy, with a very different formula for success.
Namely, it was:
HIGH opens + HIGH clickthroughs = LOW sales
… versus …
LOW opens + LOW clickthroughs = HIGH sales
Huh?
Yeah, that was my first reaction too.
How could less people opening my emails, combined with less people clicking through to my sales device, actually increase my sales?
It was a hard concept to grasp at first.
But even the most difficult concepts become crystal clear under the searing light of reality.
It finally “clicked” for me one day, pardon the pun, after starting to see the results of his philosophy firsthand. It was like emerging from a long, dark, cold winter.
In an instant, I realized the reason I’d been having such a difficult time writing emails was because the way I’d been taught to write them went against my natural instincts.
The concept of focusing on opens and clicks never really made sense to me.
But hey, it was what the “professionals” were doing, so I did it.
What Clayton’s philosophy essentially boiled down to was…
Get the sale! Get the sale! Get the sale!
Well, duh.
My mindset immediately shifted from getting a click to getting a committed action.
As Daniel is fond of saying, you can’t cash clicks at the teller window.
In the final analysis…
The guy or gal with dirt-low open rates and clickthrough rates who skillfully persuades in virtually every email they send out is going to earn a whole lot more money than the guy or gal with sky-high opens and clickthroughs.
In the end, it’s all about skillful persuasion.
And that’s best accomplished by going straight for the jugular… right in your emails!
